Embrace uncertainty not by making a gut choice but by capturing and dealing with it when planning. Maths are useful! 1/9

Thu Jul 13 09:30:04 +0000 2017

Replying to @bruncedric

An estimate should never ever be a single value, I had great success lately by asking for “most likely, highest possible, lowest possible”

Thu Jul 13 09:30:21 +0000 2017

Replying to @bruncedric

That’s easy for anybody to assert (engineers but not only) and that’s enough for the maths to work.

Next step is to integrate that into your processes and dashboards, a syntax & a couple of custom spreadsheets function might help.

Thu Jul 13 09:32:24 +0000 2017

Replying to @bruncedric

I’m using “mostlikely~highest~lowest”, if there is no uncertainty then it’s just “mostlikely” and “mostlikely~highest” is valid too.

Then you observe what is going on and replace such 20~25~14 values by the measures. Same tool. Total gets closer to reality w smaller range.

I’m using the double triangular distribution to sum those uncertain values and get an interval with 95% confidence: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three-point_estimation

Thu Jul 13 09:34:15 +0000 2017

Replying to @bruncedric

Integrating it into you domain specific language should be fairly easy too, just define a custom EDatatype and a Java class to work with it

What is missing in EMF is a different contract: resource.dispose() (or similar) and an adoption by res implementation.

Replying to @TristanFAURE, @vladacretoaie, @kolovos and @EclipseSirius

The “strategy” is only about using the existing contract in a way which is faster. It has to be done by adopters depending on their context.
